Cross Country Running in American Colleges - Interview with Mattia Zen

Mattia Zen is an emerging name on the cross country scene in the U.S., currently matriculating as a freshman (first year) at Temple University in Philadelphia. Hailing from Varese, a town in the Italian province of Lombardy, Mattia sat down with us to discuss his experience in the United States, the challenges and opportunities he is facing, and his academic and athletic future.

From Varese to Philadelphia: A Cultural Transition

Mattia’s decision to move to the United States was fueled by his passion for athletics and desire to maximize his potential. He chose to study and compete as a student athlete in the United States, leaving behind his comfort zone to experience a different culture and improve his athletic skills.

Entering a new world where the number of high-level athletes is much higher than in Italy, Mattia found a significant difference. His best result was a top 40th, which, considering the number of participants and the level of competition in the United States, is a great achievement.

An American college experience: Academics and Athletics

Mattia is studying Statistical Science and Data Analysis, a course that combines mathematics, statistics, and programming, with an emphasis on business and economics. This education will not only provide him with useful skills for his professional future, but is also recognized as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) in the United States, offering more opportunities to stay and work in the country after graduation.

The cross country season in the United States starts in September and ends in mid-November, a significantly different time than in Italy. Mattia has raced in many high-level competitions, bringing valuable points to his team and gaining valuable experience.

Athletic and Structural Differences

When asked to compare athletics in the United States and Italy, Mattia points out the obvious disparity in terms of facilities and organization. American universities have significantly more resources, which translates into better facilities and more opportunities for athletes.
