Valentina Brunelli: A Dive Into American University

Valentina Brunelli

Hello everyone! Today we have the pleasure of introducing you to a very special story, that of Valentina Brunelli, a young Italian swimmer who decided to embark on a unique and exciting adventure: studying and practicing her favorite sport, swimming, at an American college.

Valentina, originally from Rome, is 19 years old and is currently in the United States for her first year of college. She chose to attend Sioux Falls in NCAA Division 2, an experience she described as a “sign of destiny.”

The Path

The path to arrive at this decision was neither short nor simple. Valentina had to go through a series of bureaucratic steps, contacts with various universities, and video calls with coaches. But in the end, the choice of university was made considering several factors, not only the coach, but also the studies, the place, the team, and the people.

Valentina is studying biology, and although she always wanted to become a marine biologist, she is discovering new interests because of the flexibility of the American study system. In fact, in the United States, it is not necessary to have a clear idea of your career from the beginning: you can change majors even after two years.

The Experience

Adjusting to the American university environment was not easy. Valentina had to deal with a new language, new classes, and a new environment. But with the help of her international classmates and university advisors, she managed to overcome the initial difficulties.

One aspect Valentina particularly appreciated about the American university system is the approach of the professors, who are very helpful and understanding, especially toward student-athletes. In addition, the final grade is influenced by class attendance and weekly tests and quizzes, a system that helps to stay on top of your studies.

Swimming

Turning to swimming, Valentina noted some significant differences from Italy. In the United States, the pools are shorter (25 yards, just under 25 meters) and the competition events are different. She also trains more than she did in Italy, with double training sessions and competitions even on weekdays.

Campus Life

Living on campus is a unique experience. Valentina Brunelli had the opportunity to move into a small apartment with three other girls, equipped with a kitchen and bathroom. In addition, the campus offers several sports facilities and a physical therapy center.

Conclusion

Despite the challenges and difficulties, Valentina highly recommends this experience to other girls. According to her, one grows a lot from this experience and gains useful skills for the future, in addition to learning English. The biggest advice Valentina gives to those who are thinking of embarking on a similar path is not to be ashamed to ask questions, to ask for help when needed, because it is a whole new world.

Valentina is an example of how a passion for sports can open doors to new opportunities and life experiences. Her journey proves that with determination and courage, it is possible to achieve your dreams, even if it means crossing the ocean and immersing yourself in a completely new reality.

Thank you, Valentina Brunelli, for sharing your story with us. We wish you the best in your future in the United States and look forward to hearing more about your adventures in American colleges!
