Hello everyone! Today we have the opportunity to learn more about Lucia Busso, an Italian volleyball player who has decided to take on a new challenge in American universities.
Lucia is originally from Turin and started playing volleyball in her small town, Pino Torinese. After six years, she moved to Cambiano, another nearby village, and then played for two years in the B2 Series with Alchieri 76. Since last summer, Lucia has moved to the United States, more precisely to Oregon, where she plays in the top tier of volleyball in the NCAA championship.
Parallel to her sports career, Lucia is also a student. She started by studying education to become a teacher, but decided to change and start a path called “Health and Wellness,” related to the athletic field.
Speaking of the differences between Italian and American volleyball, Lucia highlights the attention given to the athlete in America, both in terms of rules and organization. One of the main differences is the emphasis on physical training and body care, spending a lot of time in the weight room, almost like a professional team.
Lucia also emphasizes the high level of play in America, comparable to Italian Serie A2, and the importance of being a good student to succeed on the field.
One of the main difficulties has been time management between practice, games, and study. Fortunately, American universities offer great support to student-athletes, with tutors and staff dedicated to organizing classes and schedules.
Lucia highlighted how much easier it is to manage time when you live on a campus, unlike Italy where you have to get ready an hour earlier to go to practice and arrive home an hour after you are done.
Campus life is another aspect that Lucia loves: living with teammates, eating breakfast together, going to class together, is a unique experience that you don’t get in Italy.
Lucia Busso plays in the West Coast Conference, which means that most of the teams she plays with are in California. This has given Lucia the opportunity to travel and visit some of the major cities in California.
Finally, Lucia talked about the sports season in the United States, which is different from the Italian season. The volleyball season in the United States is concentrated in the fall, from late August to mid-November, with intense and frequent matches. After the season, there is more time to devote to physical training and technical improvement.
